Church Life

2025 Theme – “Looking Forward with Hope, Patience and Prayer” based on Romans 12:12

Mission drives us. Special music, worship and study inspire us, and our Summer Vacation Bible School draws families from three school districts. We’re active partners with neighboring churches in Pavilion, York and East Bethany and within the Genesee Valley Presbytery.

With a host of supporting volunteers coordinating everything from coffee hours, faith development to worship and music, our Session helps guide our flock. Our 2025 team is Brenda Noble, Carol Hirsch, Marge Sturm, John Noble, Pat Lockwood, and Ann Shephard - Clerk.

Music

Covington is blessed with soloists and choir singers, instrumentalists and a church family who appreciate music of all genres. We have four octaves of handbells, a piano and organ in the sanctuary, and on occasion, we’ve been known to have bagpipes on the premises for our annual Kirkin’ of the Tartans. Our Worship & Music Team is dedicated to celebrating special holidays in creative ways and bringing new ideas to the forefront.

Faith Formation

Providing a nurturing, learning haven for school age kids on Sunday mornings is part of our past, present and future. Our cadre of volunteers incorporates music, crafts, scripture and fun into an hour filled weekly program beginning at 9 am. A children’s message is also a key component of our Sunday worship service. Families with young children find our children’s lounge a comfortable place to sit during our service. With your own space to spread out, snack or play quietly, this is a great alternative to sitting in the pews.

During Vacation Bible School you’ll likely find kids ages 3-12 knee-deep in hands-on learning activities across our campus. In 2025 our theme is Road Trip.

Adult and multi-generational study groups are coordinated throughout the year and are lead by Pastor Kristina and volunteers. Christmas and the Lenten season are givens, but we also gather to study books, movies, and issues of the day.

“For where there are two or three gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Matthew 18:20

Covington is blessed with a special wing dedicated to faith formation for children and adults. Our Sunday School Team is committed to delivering an impactful but flexible curriculum to meet the needs of kids, their families and adult learners.

Our Story

Our congregation is a collection of joyful, humble servants from the diverse, agricultural community of the Genesee River Valley located in Western New York. We are rooted in service and social consciousness, and blessed with an abundance of talents. Being faithful and humble followers, we stand together as servants of our Lord and Savior in meeting the spiritual and physical needs of our friends and family, community and the wider world.

Looking back over nearly 200 years, our church was born of dissent. A revolt took place in 1825 within the flock of our present-day neighbor, the First Presbyterian Church of York. At issue was “the observance of the Thursday before communion as a special fast day.” Their Session passed a resolution that no work or attendance at school would be allowed. Their minister, Rev. Henry Wilkins, was not in agreement. In fact, he remarked that he supposed no member would be allowed to take a drink of water or a chew of tobacco on those Thursdays without the permission of the Elders, who were wanting a more intensive, spiritual dedication within the church. This so offended the Elders that all except one, along with ten families, resigned and withdrew. These fine folks became the cornerstone of Covington in 1828.

Today, our Covington Elders would attest we’re not the firebrands of yesteryear. But we are singularly dedicated to loving our neighbors and welcoming strangers. Together we strive to be more open, to inspire the spiritual growth of all ages, genders and races through responsible leadership and active participation in a safe, worshipful, joyful environment grounded in the Biblical word.
